Celestia
Can Alternative Route be played after the captain says he will fail, and is it wasted if he won't use it?
The rulebook allows this timing; what happens if the captain declines is only community consensus.

Yes, it may be played even after the captain says he cannot pass. The captain chooses which dice to re-roll, and players generally treat a card he declines to use as wasted if the ship then crashes, so passengers should hold it if the captain can already pass. The rulebook does not say what happens in that case; many groups take the card back.
