Does a furnishing need to be next to other furnishings, and what if I have no empty cavern?
The rulebook requires an empty cavern and says nothing about adjacency.

Furnishings go on any empty cavern space; there is no adjacency requirement. With no empty cavern you cannot furnish and must excavate first.
