Must I play a card in battle, and can it be a quest or upgrade card?
Yes. Every participant plays one card if they have any in hand, even if it is not a battle card. An Upgrade or Quest card adds nothing and counts as a bluff with no strength, but if you win you still discard it. You only skip a card when your hand is empty.
