Must I take the starting player token when I use Meeting Place?
The publisher corrected an earlier mistaken answer and reconfirmed, after checking with the designer, that the starting player step is optional, overriding the rulebook wording.

No — taking the starting player token is optional, so you may use Meeting Place only to play a minor improvement (you must do at least one of the two). The board's "and/or" wording is correct. The publisher once said it was mandatory, then corrected that and reconfirmed the optional reading in 2024. This overrides the rulebook's action-space entry, which says to "immediately take the starting player token" and reads as "become the starting player and afterward minor improvement".
